Welcome to the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network Inspire blog’s newest feature profiling local Denver nonprofits! Our first profile is on A Precious Child, which is located in Broomfield.
Tell us a little about your organization, A Precious Child. How did it come about and what is its mission?
One in six children in Colorado are living below the Federal Poverty Line. Unfortunately, research has shown that low-income children trail behind their peers in intellectual development. They are also less likely to succeed in school, are less likely to graduate from high school, and are more likely to become poor parents in the future.
A Precious Child is devoted to making a positive impact in the lives of those disadvantaged and displaced children and families by improving their quality of life. We collaborate with over 250 Agency Partners, such as schools, organization, social services, fire and police departments, churches, and shelters, whom refer to us the most vulnerable children and their families that are in need of our services. We run eight programs, which provide basic essentials (clothing, coats, shoes, sports equipment, backpacks, school supplies, and toiletries) and educational opportunities to the children in our community who need our help the most.
Tell me a little more about the population A Precious Child serves.
We served over 31,000 children and 6,400 caregivers/adults throughout eight Denver metro counties last year alone. We focus on serving children that are poverty-stricken, homeless, abused, at-risk or facing a huge life challenge and without access to basic essentials. Many of the families that we serve come to us a result of an unexpected injury, illness or job loss that has made providing for their family a struggle.
